I know this doesnt then officially make you a pirate, but why dont you just go into 0.0 to kill people, I mean seriously, sod sall those empire rules and aggro timers etc, 0.0 is far simplier and you can still go shopping in Jita.

I once flew to Jita to buy my first ever brand new falcon, having trained all of the electronic and jamming skills up to level 5. Only to realise I hadnt trained the Recon skill, even to level 1.

For solo or gang/fleet? Solo: Dram, Firetail, Ishkur, Taranis, Cynabal, Vaga, Sabre, Cane, Domi, Drake, Caracal, Stealth Bomber (any race), Thrasher.... there are loads more of course.

If this is any help, as for the actual mining itself, take your time to scout out a good, quiet 0.5 sec system. Unless things have changed recently, 0.5 systems have the most valuable ores. Also try and find a system that is quiet and preferably...

T2 resistances and better damage bonuses, I would take an AF over a cruiser and Im sure you will be able to plough through level 1 and 2's with an AF. Btw, do you already have missile or gun skills? Because (in general) missiles tend to be easier...
